September is Head Lice Prevention Month; The National Pediculosis Association Recommends Combing as a Winning Strategy Over Pesticides Wockhardt announced its decision to discontinue manufacturing the pesticide lindane as a lice shampoo. This important news coincides with the NPA’s annual back-to-school campaign to educate the community about head lice and the public health value of routine screening, early detection, and safe treatment. NEWTON, Mass. (PRWEB) September 01, 2022 The not-for-profit National Pediculosis Association (NPA) began in 1983 as a grassroots organization with a mission to protect children from the misuse and abuse of pesticide treatments for lice. Lindane also known as gamma hexachlorocyclohexane is chlorinated benzene and was at this time the pediatrician’s …
Chemical Cocktails – The neglected threat of toxic mixtures and how to fix it
FDA clears pesticide shampoos for lice and then the manufacturers market them as a “kit” with a lice spray for a child’s personal environment. Bad idea!! Always has been. It all adds up – and researchers are speaking out. A new CHEM Trust report “Chemical cocktails – The neglected threat of toxic mixtures and how to fix it”, highlights the reality of our exposure to multiple chemicals, the threat it represents to our health and the wider environment and why we are not properly protected. In the report we call for urgent action from the EU to better protect people and the wider environment from exposure to real-life chemical cocktails. In our analysis, there are workable and effective policy solutions available to address this complex problem. The EU should now adopt them to deliver the …

The Real Reason People From History Wore Powdered Wigs
European men were adamant on wearing wigs whenever they would go out. The wig at that time was commonly known as the peruke wig or the periwig. These wigs had a huge history behind them and they were not only worn as a fashionable statement.Wigs were not only a fashion statement but they were also a representation of a higher social rank and even royal blood. The wealthy Europeans hid many secrets under their wigs. These secrets were very gruesome and included bloody open sores and gruesome patches of hair loss due to syphilis. These wigs were also used as a means to prevent head lice until the wigs got infested. Medieval wigs truly have a lot of history under their elaborate structures.History of Yesterday: …

The hiatus of the handshake
The response to the COVID-19 pandemic prompted abrupt and potentially lasting changes to human behavior, including the types of direct contact that enable transmission of common pathogens. Although the handshake and other types of physical contact are gradually returning, they have been on an extended hiatus. Such changes have already altered the epidemiology of a broad range of infectious diseases, including influenza, measles, and norovirus, and will likely continue to affect their age distribution, severity, and typical seasonal patterns. Changes to contact patterns may also nudge the evolutionary trajectory of pathogens, as they adapt to new norms of less human contact. Initiatives to measure social contact patterns through time and track their effects on the epidemiology of endemic …
Oxidative stress of glyphosate, AMPA and metabolites of pyrethroids and chlorpyrifos pesticides among primary school children in Cyprus
Exposure to various pesticides, such as pyrethroids and chlorpyrifos, has been previously associated with adverse effects on children's health. Scientific evidence on the human toxicity of glyphosate (GLY) and its primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is limited, particularly for children. This study aimed to i) assess the exposure determinants of the studied pesticides measured in children in Cyprus, and ii) determine the association between the urinary pesticides and the biomarkers of DNA and lipid oxidative damage.ScienceDirect: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0013935122006430 …
Wockhardt Lindane Shampoo Discontinued!
Wockhardt pharmaceuticals has decided to discontinue its product known as Lindane Shampoo regulated by the FDA. This decision to discontinue lindane shampoo is long in coming but a critical step to end exposures to a known neurotoxic and carcinogenic pesticide treatment prescribed for children with lice. The NPA first petitioned the FDA against the use of lindane for lice (and scabies) in 1983 and continued its activism to this day. Details on what was scientifically known about this chemical were included again with the NPA’s Lindane Project and its 2010 petition . The Environmental Protection Agency cancelled registrations of lindane in 2006. Lindane was designated as a persistent organic pollutant and one of the toxic chemicals listed in the Dirty Dozen by the …

Two years after seven people, including three children, died in Sitapur in February 2020 after allegedly inhaling poisonous gas leaking from a chemical factory, a field epidemiological investigation has confirmed the cause of deaths due to inhaling fumes from a chemical named Lindane that is generally used as agricultural insecticide. According to the epidemiological investigation jointly conducted by ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, department of health and family welfare, UP and CSIR-IITR, Lucknow the cause of death was due to asphyxia following the leakage of toxic fumes from Lindane that was stored in the chemical factory. From Hindustan Times: …
Keep kids with lice at home
Oklahoma lawmakers have been known to conduct themselves in curious ways, but a bill passed by the Oklahoma House of Representatives left us scratching our heads. If senators fail to kill House Bill 3159, which would allow students infected with head lice to continue attending class, that itch — like head lice — will spread quickly. The only way to prevent head lice from spreading is to treat the host, killing the lice and nits. European cooperation to tackle the legacies of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and lindane
Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) waste isomers from lindane production are the largest single POPs legacy, with an estimated 4.8 to 7.4 million tonnes of disposed waste. The largest part of this waste – 1.8 to 3 million tonnes – was disposed in Europe, where most producers were located. This paper provides a short overview of projects supported by the European Union (EU) to address this waste legacy and to implement the Stockholm Convention for this group of POPs with associated protection of soil, ecosystems and human health. We report here particularly on the results of a project financed by the EU called the “HCH in EU project”, which aimed to develop a systematic inventory of sites where HCH was handled and potentially resulted in contamination. The compiled information provide guidance for …
