Over 40,000 tons of neurotoxin were stored without any protection in North Macedonia

January 26, 2023 //  by NPA

The tests undertaken by the Ministry of Environment of North Macedonia at Pelenica, a tourist location next to the Skopje suburb of Drachevo, showed a high concentration of lindane (HCH). Lindane is a neurotoxin that can harm the nervous system, liver, and kidneys, and may be carcinogenic. OHIS, the now-defunct chemical complex that was responsible for the site, did not place the hazardous waste in concrete pools, as is the case with the two landfills in OHIS’s yard, which makes the chemical particularly dangerous for the soil and groundwater in the area. Testing confirms presence of illegaly deposited toxic substances in the soil According to tests done at several points on the site, high concentrations of HCH were detected in the top soil layer, at a depth of 20 …

Facilitations in the Clinical Diagnosis of Human Scabies through the Use of Ultraviolet Light (UV-Scab Scanning): A Case-Series Study

January 23, 2023 //  by NPA

A discovery supported by serendipity seems to offer a new source of support for the diagnosis of the viability of scabies infestations through in vivo and in situ identification of burrows and mite bodies when illuminated by 365 nm of UVA light (UV-scab scanning). This procedure is able to identify a tunnel visible to the naked eye thanks to its bluish-white luminescence much more efficiently than any other visible-light sources. The body of Sarcoptes scabiei also emits a dot-like luminescence (white or green), although this is visible only when magnifying a common digital photograph at full size on any monitor. To a greater extent than in full clinical conditions, this procedure promises the best diagnostic results in paucisymptomatic forms characterized by ab initio …

Forensic doctor explains her lice-related diagnosis at negligent homicide trial

November 18, 2022 //  by NPA

Nov. 16—The negligent homicide trial of Christian Cummings enters its fourth day on Thursday with a doctor from the state's largest health care corporation expected to explain whether lice are dangerous or not. Dr. Resmiye Oral, the head of Dartmouth Health Child Advocacy and Protection Program, will likely be asked to address the organization's guidance on lice. Lice have become a key focus in the trial, where a jury will decide if Cummings, 24, is guilty in the negligent homicide death of his 1 1/2 -year-old daughter Kamryn Cummings in February 2019. Authorities say she was a victim of neglect, and an autopsy determined lice infestation was a contributing cause, said Dr. Christine James, a former New Hampshire deputy medical examiner who performed the autopsy. James testified …

Oldest known sentence written in first alphabet discovered – on a head-lice comb

November 14, 2022 //  by NPA

It's a simple sentence that captures the hopes and fears of modern-day parents as much as the bronze age Canaanite who owned the doubled-edged ivory comb on which the words appear. Believed to be the oldest known sentence written in the earliest alphabet, the inscription on the luxury item reads: “May this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard.” Unearthed in Lachish, a Canaanite city state in the second millennium BCE and the second most important city in the kingdom of Judah, the comb suggests that humans have endured lice for thousands of years and that even the wealthiest were not spared the grim infestations. "The inscription is very human," said Prof Yosef Garfinkel, an archaeologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who helped direct the Lachish excavations. …

Human pediculosis, a global public health problem

October 10, 2022 //  by NPA

Background: Human pediculosis is caused by hematophagous lice, which are transmitted between individuals via direct and/or indirect contact. Despite the public health importance of louse infestation, information concerning the global burden of pediculosis and the epidemiological landscape of louse-borne diseases is limited. The aim of this review was to summarize the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of lice infestation in humans. We also discussed the latest advances in molecular taxonomy and molecular genetics of lice. Methods: We searched five electronic bibliographic databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, VIP Chinese Journal Database, and Wanfang Data) and followed a standard approach for conducting scoping reviews to identify studies on various aspects of human lice. …

Chemical Cocktails – The neglected threat of toxic mixtures and how to fix it

August 16, 2022 //  by NPA

FDA clears pesticide shampoos for lice and then the manufacturers market them as a “kit” with a lice spray for a child’s personal environment. Bad idea!! Always has been.  It all adds up – and researchers are speaking out. A new CHEM Trust report “Chemical cocktails – The neglected threat of toxic mixtures and how to fix it”, highlights the reality of our exposure to multiple chemicals, the threat it represents to our health and the wider environment and why we are not properly protected. In the report we call for urgent action from the EU to better protect people and the wider environment from exposure to real-life chemical cocktails. In our analysis, there are workable and effective policy solutions available to address this complex problem. The EU should now adopt them to deliver the …

The Real Reason People From History Wore Powdered Wigs

August 15, 2022 //  by NPA

European men were adamant on wearing wigs whenever they would go out. The wig at that time was commonly known as the peruke wig or the periwig. These wigs had a huge history behind them and they were not only worn as a fashionable statement.Wigs were not only a fashion statement but they were also a representation of a higher social rank and even royal blood. The wealthy Europeans hid many secrets under their wigs. These secrets were very gruesome and included bloody open sores and gruesome patches of hair loss due to syphilis. These wigs were also used as a means to prevent head lice until the wigs got infested.
