School nurse among Iowa's Great Nurses
One of Iowa's 100 Great Nurses.

Sioux City Journal
March 12 Online Edition

Kathy Bernard, a nurse in the Sioux City Community School District, was recently selected as one of Iowa's 100 Great Nurses.

The award celebrates outstanding nurses who's courage, competence and commitment to patients and the nursing profession stands out above all others.

Bernard was selected out of an initial pool of 338 nominees. She will receive the award at a banquet in Des Moines on May 6 at the beginning of Nurses Week.

Bernard was nominated by the staff of Longfellow Elementary School. In the nomination, she was cited for her outstanding commitment in several ways, such as developing a plan for identifying students with food allergies that neither singles out the student nor makes them feel different; and working with the staff on an ongoing basis to educate them on student health conditions and concerns.

"(Kathy) cares for all students with compassion and empathy, whether fixing up a scraped knee or checking for head lice," said Longfellow Elementary School principal Mary Motz. "She listens with great concern and empathy which often provides a need that our students have."
