{"id":2611,"date":"2020-03-18T07:03:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T11:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/comb\/?page_id=2611"},"modified":"2020-03-18T07:03:33","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T11:03:33","slug":"body-lice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/comb\/what-are-head-lice-and-nits\/frequently-asked-questions\/body-lice\/","title":{"rendered":"Body Lice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are they and how do they differ from head lice?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Biologically, the principal difference between the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/images\/louses.jpg\">head louse<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/images\/bodylouse.jpg\">body louse<\/a>&nbsp;is in habitat.&nbsp; Their physical appearance is so similar that it is almost impossible to visually tell them apart.&nbsp; The World Health Organization says that head lice as opposed to body lice is now the most prevalent parasitic infestation of humans in the United States and Europe.&nbsp; Head lice are ubiquitous in most developing countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The head louse occurs primarily on the head and cements its eggs to the hair shafts.&nbsp; It can also infest the eyebrows and eyelashes.&nbsp; The body louse (commonly called the clothing louse) is found on the body and attaches its eggs to fibers of clothing, especially along the seams of the clothing\u2019s inner surface.&nbsp; The body louse feeds less frequently and is generally more robust than the head louse.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/images\/crabpic.jpg\">crab louse<\/a>&nbsp;is quite distinct from the head and body louse in its appearance, habits and location.&nbsp; It is principally found in the pubic and perianal regions, but occasionally may occur in coarse hair on other parts of the body (Buxton, 1947; Busvine, 1966; Sholdt 1979).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;body lice&#8221; is sometimes used to mean scabies.&nbsp; This confuses the issue when people seek help for their condition.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.headlice.org\/faq\/scabies.htm\">Scabies<\/a>&nbsp;represent an entirely different organism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pubic lice have been documented to infest the scalps of children but infestations of this type are not commonly reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are they and how do they differ from head lice?
