A report entitled “A Simple Treatment for Head Lice: Dry-On, Suffocation-Based Pediculicide” by Dr. Dale Pearlman was recently published in Pediatrics, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Although new research for alternative head lice treatment is always encouraging, the NPA finds it impossible to objectively evaluate this report based on the following:

  • Lack of independent scientific study. Dr. Pearlman’s conflicting roles as inventor/developer of the product, patent holder, conductor of the study, interpreter of the study results and author of the article. Reuter’s wire service reports that he is now seeking backing from the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Absence of blinding, randomization, and controls.
