The Science of Pesticide Resistance

NPA Supported Study Published in Prestigious Science Journal

A recent study supported by the NPA and the MAES Hatch Grant has been published in Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology 66, 130-143, 2000.  This study has reinforced earlier findings by identifying permethrin resistance in various strains of head lice.

Perhaps most important in this work is the trail blazing research that will enable resistance in lice to be identified by genetic mutations rather than the tedious and often difficult collection of live lice and assay method.   Thanks to this research, it is now possible to identify resistance efficiently and objectively, allowing for routine monitoring and early identification of resistance problems.

A copy of this article, titled Molecular Analysis of kdr-like Resistance in Permethrin-Resistant Strains of Head Lice, Pediculus capitis, can be obtained at www.sciencedirect.com.
